A Madison County, Ill., jury has found that a longtime welder's neurological problems weren't caused by manganese-containing welding fumes. The plaintiff had sued six companies, claiming that welding equipment fumes caused him to develop a movement disorder. A lawyer for several welding rod makers noted that juries have sided with the defense in all but one of 15 such trials held. The cases generally seek to draw a link between manganese contained in welding rods and neurological impairment in welders.
