It might just be the most expensive phone call never made. California attorney Allen Kent ran up more than $250,000 in legal fees defending against inquiries by the state Supreme Court and the State Bar after failing to appear for oral arguments -- and failing to give the justices a courtesy call. Kent tried to recover those costs by suing his former employer, Aguilar & Sebastinelli, arguing it was the firm's responsibility to cover for him. A San Francisco jury agreed but awarded just $11,331 in damages.
