New Jersey bank mergers are growing in value if not in number. Seven mergers and acquisitions involving New Jersey banks this year have totaled $2.9 billion, a sevenfold increase over last year's $427.1 million for half a dozen mergers. Part of the difference is due to one merger that was paid for with stock. But even excluding that transaction, the average bank merger this year was worth $271.4 million, compared with $85.4 million last year. The largest deal so far this year was worth $1.9 billion.
