New York state has paid $7 million to a former police officer, the first installment of a $14.8 million settlement stemming from an all-terrain vehicle accident that rendered the claimant a quadriplegic. Scott J. Brumber had been patrolling a beach and was attempting to access a causeway via a "cut," or break, in the dunes when he struck a post or stake that apparently had been placed to support snow fences. Judge James J. Lack found the state wholly liable for Brumber's injuries.

New York state has paid $7 million to a former Suffolk County police officer, the first installment of a $14.8 million settlement stemming from an all-terrain vehicle accident that rendered the claimant a quadriplegic.
The claimant’s counsel, Daniel P. Buttafuocco of Woodbury, confirmed that the state sent the check late last month. The upfront $7 million will be followed by monthly disbursements, minus about $4.8 million in legal fees.
