A popular city police officer was fighting for his life Thursday after being hit by an SUV driven by a federal judge, New Haven, Conn., police said. Officer Dan Picagli, a 17-year veteran of the force, was hit while working an extra-duty job directing traffic in the rain Tuesday night in a dimly lit area. City officials identified the driver of the SUV that hit Picagli as John M. Walker Jr., a judge on the 2nd Circuit, who lives in Connecticut and maintains court chambers in New Haven.
