A federal jury in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania awarded $38.4 million to Pittsburgh-based MuniAuction Inc. in a patent infringement case. The jury found that New York-based Thomson Financial and a related company, i-Deal, were liable for willful infringement of a patent covering a program that assists in online auctions for municipal bonds. MuniAuction patented the software in 1997 and conducted the first-ever online auction of municipal bonds in Pittsburgh.
