While M&A work is what's keeping many Pittsburgh lawyers busy, one recruiter says she has a few large-firm bankruptcy candidates for which there isn't an open spot, and it's been that way for more than a year. Eric A. Schaffer, a bankruptcy partner in Reed Smith's Pittsburgh office, says the upswing in bankruptcy work hasn't hit yet: "There are a fair number of experienced bankruptcy lawyers who are underemployed right now." Yet Philadelphia firms have been adding bankruptcy lawyers to their ranks.

If Philadelphia bankruptcy lawyers are holding their breath in anticipation of an upswing in work, their Pittsburgh counterparts are turning blue.
An expected slowdown in the economy combined with a recent spike in highly leveraged buyouts has had some Philadelphia firms adding bankruptcy lawyers to the ranks. It’s the M&A work, however, that is keeping many Pittsburgh lawyers busy now.
