Native Houstonian Jeffrey M. Cameron, vice president, legal counsel and corporate secretary of Group 1 Automotive Inc., grew up less than five miles from the corporate headquarters of the Fortune 500 company that has become his home away from home for the past two years. Unlike many attorneys who assume the role of in-house counsel after holding a wide array of legal positions, Cameron’s road has been direct. In August 2004, Cameron, then a 7th-year corporate and securities associate with Vinson & Elkins, became the first and, at the time, only in-house lawyer for Group 1, which V&E helped take public in 1997.
Cameron, 36, has never looked back, partly because he’s too busy helping move the company forward.
