A lawsuit over gratuities filed by 14 waiters against cruise operator World Yacht will go forward following a Manhattan judge's denial in part of the company's motion to dismiss. The judge held that World Yacht's imposing of a 20 percent service charge without compensating its staff accordingly may violate a state law that prohibits employers from accepting or retaining gratuities received by employees. Damages could be in the millions of dollars, according to the complaint.

World Yacht offers brunch and dinner cruises around Manhattan with tickets ranging from $44.59 to $88.83, plus tax and service charges. The service charges are at issue in the suit.
