A San Francisco jury awarded $10.3 million in damages Monday in an asbestos case brought by a 60-year-old former ship fitter who allegedly has mesothelioma. Jeffrey Kaiser said it's a big verdict for his relatively new firm, and likely one of California's 10 largest compensatory asbestos verdicts in the last 15 years. But plaintiff George Barnes may only be entitled to $2.3 million in a final ruling, says Kaiser, since the jury found defendant Thorpe Insulation only 15 percent responsible for the harm.
