A New Jersey judicial ethics panel is calling for a six-month suspension of Superior Court Judge Wilbur Mathesius -- known as "Wild Bill" for his tendency to shoot from the hip -- over caustic remarks he made while in robes. His behavior included berating a jury for an acquittal and making derogatory comments about another judge. Mathesius was characteristically virulent in his reaction to the panel's recommendation. "I'm incredulous over the grotesque disproportionality of it all," he said.

A judicial ethics panel is calling for a six-month suspension of Mercer County Superior Court Judge Wilbur Mathesius over caustic remarks and other improper comments he made while in robes.
His behavior — which included berating a jury for an acquittal and making derogatory comments about another judge — was “so serious and prolonged that it calls for a severe measure of public discipline,” the Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct held July 19.
