A federal judge said last week he wants to examine internal FCC documents regarding two large recent telephone company mergers to see if the Department of Justice protected market competition in approving the buyouts. Some consumer advocates cried foul over last year's SBC-AT&T and Verizon-MCI deals, claiming the DOJ had rubber-stamped them. While reversal or new conditions for the now-completed mergers are unlikely, the court could possibly establish tougher obstacles for future mergers.

A federal judge said on Friday he wants to examine internal FCC documents regarding two large recent telephone company mergers to see if the Justice Department protected market competition in approving the buyouts.
It’s considered unlikely that U.S. District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan’s review would lead to action so drastic as a reversal or new conditions for the now-completed mergers of SBC Communications Inc. with AT&T Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc. with MCI Inc.
