Four months after getting into hot water for a price-fixing scheme, Valassis Communications is back in the FTC's sights after announcing last week its involvement in a $1.3 billion merger with Advo. A leading producer of coupon inserts, Valassis entered a consent decree in March over the CEO's purported attempts to entice a primary competitor into a bid to raise prices for newspaper inserts. Generally, antitrust regulators look more closely at mergers involving known antitrust violators.

Four months after getting into hot water for a price-fixing scheme, Valassis Communications Inc. is back in the Federal Trade Commission’s sights after announcing Thursday, July 6, it is merging with Advo Inc. in a $1.3 billion deal.
The deal will face antitrust review at the FTC, which entered into a consent decree in March with Valassis arising from comments president and CEO Alan Schultz made in a July 2004 conference call.
