The U.S. Treasury acknowledged last month that it sifts through an international database of banking data maintained by a Belgium-based financial group, SWIFT. "Now we discover that our powerful friend and ally is now rifling through our private bank accounts. What will happen next, I ask you?" asked one member of European Parliament.
