Just days before the U.S. government declared China one of 2005's worst infringers of intellectual property, the country hosted its first-ever international IP rights conference, focusing on the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. One of the organizers, Needle & Rosenberg's Brian C. Meadows, said the big question for many Chinese participants was how to get patent protection in the United States for their products. "They want to enter U.S. markets and avoid liability -- perhaps with generics," he said.

Called the Beijing International Pharmaceutical and Chemical Intellectual Property Forum, the conference focused on the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.
