Marc Brooks claims that the health insurer canceled his individual coverage policy without the required prior notification. Brooks' attorney said United's official position is that Brooks' policy was canceled due to a late premium payment -- but the attorney said he suspects the cancellation was due to Brooks' costly AIDS condition.

United Healthcare of Florida, one of the state’s largest health insurers, illegally terminated the policy of a man with AIDS, according to a lawsuit filed in Palm Beach Circuit Court.
In a complaint filed May 8, Marc Brooks of Palm Beach County claims that United Healthcare of Florida canceled his individual coverage policy without the required prior notification. Brooks discovered the cancellation when payment was denied for medication he takes monthly to treat his AIDS.
