Steve Riley is going against tradition. Rather than keeping what may be his firm’s competitive advantage under wraps, he’s sharing the secret. Co-founder of the Tampa-based firm The Strategic Counsel, last year Riley began franchising its client service program, “Your CorporateCounsel Advantage.”

The program had its origins back in 1997 when Riley began to worry that the Internet would render aspects of the firm’s practice obsolete. In some instances, certain types of work that the firm handled — predominantly estate planning, business work and asset protection matters — could be handled more quickly by sophisticated clients who could download documents or purchase software.
