Garmin Ltd. has filed two lawsuits against European rival TomTom Inc., claiming the company is using Garmin-patented technology in its Global Positioning System devices. In the suits, filed in U.S. District Court in Madison, Wis., Olathe, Kan.-based Garmin says TomTom has infringed on five Garmin U.S. patents protecting technology used in its GPS devices. Market analysts have said the lawsuits could mean trouble for TomTom, forcing the company's marketing out of the United States if Garmin wins.
