Are you one of those people who always thought "that" and "which" were more or less interchangeable? For the purpose of writing briefs, and correct writing in general, you should know when to use "that" rather than "which." Why? Deviation from the preferred usage is likely to irritate finicky readers, who largely think of themselves as "well-educated" readers. A reader's discomfort interferes with your ability to persuade. And if that reader is a judge? Now you've got a real problem.
