Visitors to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Web site can see a picture of Christina Tyler of Vineland, N.J., and an account of the institute’s dramatic breakthrough against the rare disease that afflicts her, genetic lipodystrophy.

“I don’t have any symptoms that I can’t live with,” she willingly told a bulletin writer for the article posted on the Web in 2003 and still there as of Jan. 13.
