A Miami-Dade jury has produced one of the state’s largest asbestos verdicts, awarding a former auto mechanic $31 million for his case of mesothelioma — an incurable cancer linked to asbestos exposure.

The verdict came as state and federal lawmakers attempt to limit asbestos manufacturers’ exposure to liability and months after Gov. Jeb Bush signed a law raising the bar for filing and litigating asbestos claims and eliminating punitive damages as an option.
