Florida-based Akerman Senterfitt is set to open a Manhattan office and is also increasing its Washington, D.C., head count. Rather than acquiring an existing New York firm, Akerman plans to hire about 10 handpicked attorneys. Akerman used to say it would focus only on Florida, but competitors say that's not financially realistic in today's competitive market. "You either have to be very big or very small," says a prominent partner at another firm. "Nothing in between seems to work."
