A unit of Staples Inc., the office products retailer, has paid $7.4 million to settle a false claims lawsuit over the sale of foreign-made goods to the federal government, the Justice Department said Tuesday.

Staples Contract and Commercial sold the government products that were made in such countries as China and Taiwan that do not have reciprocal trade agreements with the United States, the government said. Companies are required by their contracts with the General Services Administration to refrain from selling those goods to the government.
