Philadelphia may be hailed in the media as the next hip U.S. city, but, according to a Philadelphia Bar Association survey, the average age of of its lawyers is 49 and climbing. The numbers appear to back up two commonly held beliefs: that Philadelphia's legal industry has a relatively low number of recent law school graduates and is gradually losing its female members as they grow older. Women are well-represented among Philadelphia's younger lawyers, however, comprising 52 percent of lawyers under 35.

The typical Philadelphia lawyer in 2005 is a 49-year-old white male who has achieved partner status and is married with a spouse who works full time, a survey by the Philadelphia Bar Association has found.
The survey revealed that the city’s lawyers, on average, are getting older and older, and that there has been a negligible increase as to diversity.
