In his confirmation hearings, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts Jr. may be grilled for his writings from all points of his career. Many of his writings as a young law clerk for William Rehnquist in 1980 and 1981 are publicly available among the Blackmun papers. Rehnquist was often in solitary dissent during that term, and his clerks were ready to stand with him. Says a fellow clerk: "We certainly understood that John was a conservative guy, and he was working for the Court's sole true conservative."
