The former chief executive and chief financial officer of a now-defunct cheese maker have been indicted on charges they participated in a massive scheme with customers and suppliers to claim more than $600 million in nonexistent sales.

Mark Cocchiola, 49, a founder of Paterson, N.J.-based Suprema Specialties, and Steven Venechanos, 46, its former chief financial officer and corporate secretary, were charged Monday in a 38-count federal court indictment. Charges include conspiracy, bank fraud, securities fraud, mail fraud and wire fraud.
