A bitterly divided Supreme Court on Monday upheld one Ten Commandments display in Texas and struck down two others in Kentucky on First Amendment grounds, giving both sides in the rancorous church-state debate something to applaud and attack. The Ten Commandments rulings, even though mixed, seemed likely to increase the stakes for the fight over a new Supreme Court nominee, as the religious right has made the Court's church-state rulings a battle cry.
