A Briton wanted in the United States for what authorities call the biggest successful hacking effort against American military computer networks was freed on bail Wednesday after a court appearance. It was not immediately clear why U.S. officials took so long to seek extradition of Gary McKinnon -- charged with illegally accessing 97 computers in 2001 and 2002 -- but requests for foreign governments to hand over defendants in computer crime cases are very rare.
