Wanted: public interest law firm with an appreciation for choral music. That’s not exactly what University of California, Davis’ King Hall School of Law graduate Joanna Silverman is looking for, but Silverman, a co-founder of the school’s “Lawcappella” group, admits she has been asked to sing at job interviews. “I think they’re kind of joking,” said Silverman, who has yet to actually break into song on an interview. Silverman, who belonged to choral groups in high school in Los Angeles and at Haverford College, a small liberal arts school outside of Philadelphia, founded Lawcappella as a first-year law student after searching unsuccessfully for a new choral group to join in Davis. She and fellow graduate Graham Brownstein kept the group of about a dozen students together throughout their law school career, dedicating about two hours a week to choral practice and singing at the school’s annual holiday concerts. The group also performed at the school’s May 21 graduation, singing Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s “Helplessly Hoping” and a song made popular by the King’s Singers, “You Are the New Day,” for the school’s 186 graduates. The group has also participated in the law school’s annual talent show and raised money for the group’s expenses by hiring themselves out to do singing Valentines. Silverman said the weekly practices were a great stress reducer, although she says the time commitment proved to be too much for some participants. Five of the group’s singers have yet to complete their law school career and Silverman doesn’t know if her singing legacy will continue at King. “I hope so,” she said. “I really hope it lasts.”
