As countless corporations financially unraveled over the past few years, S. Gene Cauley has been co-counsel on several major securities cases and netted more than $200 million in settlements. In 2004, he served as co-lead counsel in a $41 million settlement for shareholders duped by a bankrupt energy company, NewPower Holdings Inc. The settlement reached in In re NewPower Holdings Securities Litigation resulted in the collection of millions of dollars from former officials and investment banks that backed the power company, which was set up by and is partially owned by the beleaguered Enron Corp. That win came on the heels of a $115 million settlement in another shareholder fraud case with tens of thousands of plaintiffs, In re Lernout & Hauspie Securities Litigation. There, Cauley helped recover shareholder money lost by Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products N.V., a designer of voice-recognition computer software. Cauley has sat in courtrooms around the country, from Arizona to New York. Early in his career, Cauley assisted his firm in the Nasdaq market-makers antitrust case, a heated court battle that concluded with a landmark settlement exceeding $1 billion. Currently, Cauley is engaged in several other securities and consumer fraud class actions in different parts of the country.
