Last year, Lorie Almon served as lead counsel in the sexual harassment case Mormol v. Costco Wholesale Corp., saving Costco from a damaging Title VII lawsuit in the appellate courts. That same year, she defended the city of New York in a suit leveled by about 16,000 former and current New York Police Department officers. She served as lead counsel in that employment law case, Scott v. City of New York, refuting claims that the police department unfairly divided up comp time. Over the course of her career, Almon has argued hundreds of employment cases as lead counsel in federal district courts, gaining the experience necessary for bigger cases. Already she has earned verdicts in six federal and state court cases, and won cases for important clients like Prudential Financial Inc. and Kaiser Permanente. Early in her career, Almon worked for the Corporation Counsel of the City of New York, receiving formal recognition from Mayor Rudy Giuliani for her service. At 32, she became an equity partner at Seyfarth Shaw, and recently became the head of the Chicago-based firm’s labor and employment group in New York. In addition, she became a member of Seyfarth Shaw’s national labor and employment steering committee, a group that guides 300 attorneys in the field. Maintaining her dedication to opportunities and fairness in employment law, Almon also helped found the Corporate Counsel Women of Color nonprofit. The group connects minority women who work in corporate firms, forming a reinforcing network for young professionals like herself.
