Brenda Herschbach Jarrell’s private practice revolves around the intersection of law and business with chemical and biological sciences. As head of Choate, Hall & Stewart’s life sciences group within the intellectual property department, Jarrell focuses her practice on patent protection and licensing and litigation work with pharmaceutical companies, medical institutions and biotech firms. Her impressive client list includes Bayer Corp., Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Eisai Co., Harvard’s Institute of Chemistry and Cell Biology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She has also helped breakthrough pharmaceuticals and emerging technology companies. According to Jarrell, she is the only known life sciences patent attorney with a side practice in quantum mechanics. She recently aided an emerging technology company in soliciting a patent on a system for reconstituting dinosaur DNA from fossils. She also helped a client patent a device that amplifies quanta of sound, similar to how a laser amplifies quanta of light. Jarrell graduated from Harvard University magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree at age 19 and earned a master’s degree in chemistry at age 20, a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, San Francisco at age 25, and a law degree from Harvard by the time she was 30.
