John H. Hemann just concluded his work with the Department of Justice’s Enron Task Force, serving as lead trial counsel in the prosecution of Enron Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow, and co-lead counsel in the indictment of Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Lay. Following this career-building trial, Hemann joined the San Francisco office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in January. He entered as a partner in the litigation group, specializing in the corporate investigations and criminal defense practice at the firm. Before the Enron Task Force, Hemann had tried 20 cases as an assistant U.S. attorney in San Francisco, learning the ropes through a tough caseload that included tax evasion, mail and wire fraud, and bank fraud. During his eight-year term with that office, he tried five criminal securities fraud cases, winning convictions in each case. Besides that work, he also saw a number of corruption cases, prosecuting a former East Palo Alto, Calif., mayor and an official from the San Francisco Housing Authority. In 2003, The American Lawyer, a sister publication of The National Law Journal, named him one of the 11 top federal prosecutors in the United States, building on his reputation as a high-profile prosecutor and an experienced trial lawyer. He has twice earned the Department of Justice Director’s Award for Superior Performance as an assistant U.S. attorney.
