Adopting a more-is-better belief, U.S.-based law practices are increasingly seeking to merge with foreign firms to create a global presence. If only it were so simple. Whether due to differences in management styles, pay structures, recruitment or even dress codes, transcontinental mergers can make even the trickiest domestic mergers look easy. Then there's the issue of whether a clientele can support an overseas presence. Says one consultant: "Frankly, a whole lot of mergers don't make sense."
