California's Santa Clara University has crept up to the second tier of U.S. law schools. Its applications have nearly doubled since 2000, with 5,288 candidates competing for 250 spots this year. The school wants to produce lawyers who are as comfortable on an international stage as they are in the local courthouse. Dean Donald Polden, who until last year led the University of Memphis School of Law, leads the charge. "We are definitely heading in the right direction," he says.
