For the fourth year in a row, Western New England College School of Law has been invited to participate in the American Bar Association’s National Negotiation Competition. This year’s competition will take place in Seattle on Feb. 8 and 9. Third-year law students Seth Bostock, of Amherst, Mass., and Kevin Kerwin, of Albany, N.Y., will comprise the School of Law’s negotiation team at the national competition. As the faculty advisor, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Nancy Sykes will travel with Kerwin and Bostock. After first making the national competition in 2000, WNEC won the national title in 2001 and advanced to the final round in 2002. It will again compete in the law school division as it seeks an unprecedented third straight appearance in the final round of the national tournament. WNEC advanced to the finals after a second place finish in the ABA regional competition in New York City last November. The School of Law sent three teams to the regional tournament. The team of Kerwin and Bostock placed first in the first day of competition with a perfect score from the judges and advanced the next day to the final four round, where it finished 2nd overall. Ironically, Kerwin and Bostock were last minute additions to the competition. Originally, the pair was scheduled to participate as student advisors to the other two teams from the School of Law, but was invited to compete after a late cancellation from another school. Bostock was a member of last year’s national team. The topic for this year’s national competition will be entertainment law, which will require team members to research copyright law. The national competition will take place during the ABA’s mid-year conference.
