They’re not making much money, so they might as well have a good time. That’s part of the rationale behind Venture Law Group’s second annual Tour de VLG, a day of bicycling and barbecuing that the firm staged Sunday. About 100 VLG employees, their families and firm clients turned out for the day, which started at 7:30 a.m. with a 66-mile ride from the firm’s Menlo Park offices on Sand Hill Road to the coast. The day featured two shorter, less intense rides, one 25 miles and the other 11 miles. Driving the event is VLG co-founder Craig Johnson, an avid bicyclist. After last year’s event, which featured three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, the firm’s troops were anxious for a repeat. “We value fun and family,” Johnson said. “We just sat around and had fun.” The sitting, of course, occurred after the morning bicycle jaunts. The event hasn’t been bad for business either. LeMond hired VLG to work with his fitness equipment company, LeMond Fitness Inc. Johnson is hoping that perhaps next year, the firm can entice four-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong to lead one of the rides. That is, if he’s not wrapping up a fifth win of the famous race. “Life is about having fun as well as making money,” Johnson said, “and when you’re not earning as much money, you might as well have more fun.” Surprisingly, Johnson took it easy on bike day. Despite the fact that he regularly takes overseas bicycle tours, Johnson didn’t do the long ride, opting instead for the 25-mile route. The 55-year-old worried that 20- and 30-somethings who were lining up for the big ride of the day would leave him in the dust. “They would have burned right by me,” Johnson said, adding that because he’s so slow, there was another important issue to consider: “I wanted to get back in time for lunch.”
