Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the crime of identity theft. Social Security numbers are now commonly used by employers as passwords or employee identification numbers. In an attempt to address the problem of identity theft, California recently passed a law, effective July 1, 2002, that imposes significant additional prohibitions upon companies and the use of social security numbers as identifiers.
