Love may make the world go ’round, but it also keeps jewelers, florists and greeting-card scribes in business. This month, in honor of Valentine’s Day, we asked three GCs to share their most romantic moments — and to let us in on what they plan to do that day. Just as individual GCs have different management approaches, these three GCs have distinctive styles when it comes to celebrating romance. For one, just being alone with her husband, in a child-free zone, is enough. But whatever their plan, the general consensus is this: Sure, all you need is love, but a chocolate bear or some candy hearts can sure hit the spot. LINDA MITCHELL Vice president and general counsel, America West Airlines Inc. The Legal Department Tempe, Ariz.-based America West is the nation’s eighth-largest airline, with hubs in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Columbus, Ohio. The company, which has 143 aircraft and 12,000 employees, flies to 90 destinations in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Her Valentine Plan With their two preteen kids in tow, Mitchell and her husband plan to mark the holiday by hitting the slopes in nearby Flagstaff. That’s not all Mitchell has on ice — she’ll also treat her family to a heart-shaped ice cream cake. “We used to eat them all the time back when my husband and I were dating — our friends ran a Baskin-Robbins!,” she laughs. Other gifts on tap? Goodies for the kids and gag gifts for her husband. “Maybe underwear covered in hearts,” she says, coyly. Most Romantic Moment “When you have kids, your whole concept of romance changes. Suddenly it’s just alone-time together.” But if Mitchell had to pick one moment, it’d be her husband’s 50th birthday party last year. “I rented a limo and got together a bunch of our old friends to go barhopping. We spent the night dancing, and pretending we were young and hip again.” DALE ARDIZZONE Vice president, business affairs and general counsel, The Inspirational Network Inc. (INSP) The Legal Department Charlotte, N.C.-based INSP reaches 16 million subscribers. More than 3.5 million have signed on since 2000. His Valentine Plan Here’s a great GC strategy for beating the crowds on Valentine’s Day: Go in-house. Ardizzone and his wife, Barbara, plan to celebrate the holiday with a romantic dinner at home, where they’ll feast on lobster, shrimp and other seafood favorites while “concentrating on each other.” The Ardizzones are smart to savor the one-on-one time while they have it: Barbara is expecting the couple’s first child in March. Most Romantic Moment “This year, I’ll probably give my wife a piece of jewelry related to the birth of our child. But I’d say our most romantic moment was when I proposed to her on the steps of Catholic University’s cathedral in Washington, D.C. It’s the same place her graduation was held.” JEROME SMITH General counsel, Shuffle Master Gaming The Legal Department Las Vegas-based Shuffle Master keeps Sin City’s casinos spinning — literally. The company has sold or leased more than 6,600 of its automatic card-shuffling devices, which enhance casino efficiency and security, and the company also develops table games and slot machines. His Valentine Plan Smith has higher stakes than most for remembering Valentine’s Day — it’s also his anniversary. He and his wife, Debbie, will celebrate 20 years of marriage on Feb. 14 — and Smith plans to surprise his sweetheart with a special trip to Europe. “We took the kids last year,” he explains. “This time it’s our time to be alone.” Closer to home, the couple may snuggle up to watch some movies this Valentine’s Day season. A recent favorite? “Legally Blonde,” in which a pampered sorority sister plows through Harvard Law School. “What can I say? We like comic relief,” says Smith, laughing. Most Romantic Moment “For our 10th wedding anniversary, in 1992, back when we were living in California, I surprised Debbie with a trip to Las Vegas, where we renewed our vows in an Elvis chapel.”
