ELECTIONS AND APPOINTMENTS Barbara Ehrich Locke, executive partner of the Miami office of Holland & Knight, was elected to the Board of Directors of Fiduciary Trust International of the South. Locke practices in the area of commercial litigation. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in social sciences from the University of Costa Rica in 1972 and her law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Miami School of Law in 1987. MERGERS Boston’s Goodwin Procter acquired the New York-based law firm Schneck Weltman & Hashmall to pursue its strategy of expanding its nationally recognized products liability and mass tort litigation practice and to establish a general litigation practice in New York. At the same time, two partners from other national law firms, specializing in patent and intellectual property litigation, will also join the firm. Joining Goodwin Procter from Schneck Weltman & Hashmall as litigation department partners are: Edward S. Weltman, David M. Hashmall, Jonathan I. Price, Joanne M. Gray, Glenn S. Kerner, Leonard F. Lesser and Robert Karmen. Arthur M. Schneck joins as of counsel. Joining the Corporate Department as partners are Joel W. Wagman and Ira A. Schreger. Both specialize in corporate transactions. Christopher J. Garvey, Felecia R. Wein and Frederick R. McGowen join as associates. Weltman will be the chairman of the firm’s Products Liability Litigation Practice and will head the firm’s efforts in New York to expand its litigation practice there. Also joining Goodwin Procter are partners Thomas J. Creel and Frederick H. Rein. Creel will be the chairman of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice. Rein joins the firm from Kenyon & Kenyon and has specialized in the area of pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent litigation for the past 10 years. NEW HIRES Washington, D.C.’s Kirkpatrick & Lockhart hired Kevin M. Sheys as partner. Sheys represents freight and commuter railroads, rail transit systems, state and local government transportation agencies, railroad equipment manufacturers, and other organizations involved in the railroad industry. He received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1987 and his B.A. from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1984. Also joining are associates Edward J. Fishman and Tracie D. Spear. Fishman focuses his practice on railroad regulatory and transactional matters. He earned his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1996 and his B.A. from Duke University in 1991. Spear provides counseling on Federal Railroad Administration safety issues, railroad retirement coverage, and other railroad regulatory matters. She received her J.D. from Catholic University of America in 1998 and her B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1993. New York’s Wolf, Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen expanded its New York estates and trusts practice group with the addition of partner Richard J. Duffy. Duffy comes to Wolf Block from Putney, Twombly, Hall & Hirson and has more than 28 years of experience in the field of estates and trusts. He earned his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1972. Sanford M. Litvack, the former vice chairman of The Walt Disney Company, rejoined New York’s Dewey Ballantine, as of counsel. Litvack will be resident in both the Los Angeles and New York offices. He earned his J.D. from Georgetown Law Center in 1959 and was a trial attorney with the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department before beginning in private practice in New York City. During the Carter administration, Litvack was the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department. HONORS AND AWARDS The Association of Securities and Exchange Commission Alumni in Washington, D.C., presented Richard M. Phillips, a partner in the San Francisco office of Pittsburgh’s Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, and a nationally recognized expert in the federal securities laws, with its William O. Douglas Award. The William O. Douglas Award has been conferred annually since 1993 on a SEC alumnus or alumna who has contributed to the development of the federal securities laws and served the financial and SEC community with distinction over the years. Phillips is the ninth recipient of this award. Sylvan “Sonny” Holtzman, the founding partner of Miami’s Holtzman, Equels & Furia, received the Gold Medal Award from the publishers of Miami Today at an annual awards ceremony held at The Ocean Club, on Key Biscayne earlier this month. A seven-judge panel that included leaders of South Florida’s major business organizations and the dean of the University of Miami School of Business selected Holtzman based on the superior honors that he received during the year 2000. Holtzman earned a law degree from the University of Miami in 1957.
