NEW HIRES Peter Coppelman has joined the San Francisco office of Los Angeles’ Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton as of counsel in the land use group. He was previously the principal deputy assistant attorney general in the environment and natural resources division of the Department of Justice. He received his J.D. from Cornell University. David P. Schack has joined the Los Angeles office of Pittsburgh’s Kirkpatrick & Lockhart. Schack will be a partner in the firm’s insurance coverage practice. Expanding its litigation department IP practice group, Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy appointed Michael M. Murray as partner in the firm’s New York office. Philadelphia’s Duane Morris has announced that two attorneys have joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office as partners. Alan C. Brown, 48, practices in the area of privacy and security, healthcare and government contracts law. He was previously a partner at D.C.’s McKenna & Cuneo. He received his J.D. from George Washington University in 1977. Daniel P. Weitzel, 44, practices corporate law focusing on financial institutions and emerging growth companies. He was previously a member at D.C.’s Elias, Matz, Tiernan & Herrick. He received his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1981. Thomas D. Halket, 52, has joined the New York office of Boston’s Bingham Dana. He is a partner in the technology practice group. He was previously the co-chair of the technology practice group at New York’s Hughes Hubbard & Reed. He received his J.D. from Columbia in 1974. ELECTIONS AND APPOINTMENTS Miami’s Shutts & Bowen has elevated six associates to partner. Rene J. Gonzalez-Llorens, 34, practices in the firm’s labor and employment group in Miami. She is a 1993 graduate of New York University School of Law. Susan J. Pontigas, 36, concentrates her practice in representing real estate developers. She is resident in the Miami office. She is a 1988 graduate of the University of Florida College of Law. Geoffrey L. Travis, 32, practices commercial litigation, concentrating his practice in creditors’ rights matters in Miami. He received his J.D. from the University of Florida College of Law in 1993. Bryan S. Wells, 32, practices in the financial services group in Miami. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. Suzanne M. Driscoll is a member of the firm’s eminent domain practice in Fort Lauderdale. She graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1989. Jonathan D. Gerber practices commercial litigation, insurance litigation, probate litigation and appeals in West Palm Beach. He is a 1993 graduate of the University of Florida College of Law. Washington, D.C.’s Banner & Witcoff has elevated two attorneys. Patricia E. Hong, 35, has been elected a principal shareholder. She is resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office, where she practices IP law. She received her J.D. from Catholic University of America in 1993. Binal J. Patel, 30, has been elected a shareholder. He is resident in the firm’s Chicago office, where he practices IP law. He received his J.D. from Northwestern University in 1996.
