Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison’s Hollywood connections added a touch of glamour to Staff Appreciation Week in its Palo Alto, Calif., office. The grand prize was a trip for two to see a live taping of the television show “Will & Grace.” Brobeck associate Ingrid Tung, an organizer of the week-long event, got tickets to the show from her cousin, who is one of the producers. “I got a great prize,” said legal secretary Evelyn Kempski, who won the raffle drawing. Although she hadn’t seen the sitcom before winning the award, Kempski said she’s looking forward to the adventure. Tung, along with fellow second-year associate Victoria Tidwell, put together a series of events with a Hollywood theme. The week began with an entertainment awards ceremony. Staff filled out ballots designating their choice for various categories, including “Most Likely to Win an Oscar” for both comedy and drama, “Most Likely to Win Survivor 3,” and the “Next Erin (or Aaron) Brokovich.” The awards were presented at a luncheon barbecue prepared by Brobeck attorneys. Eleven attorneys were on the event committee, while 30 attorneys worked on the barbecue. “Our staff appreciation week is completely attorney-driven,” Tung said. “It’s an opportunity to show what we would do for the staff.” Firms throughout the San Francisco Bay Area celebrated the annual event April 23-27. Originally known as Secretary’s Day, the event was broadened many years ago to include all staff and eventually extended into a week of festivities. At San Francisco-based Morrison & Foerster, partners went office to office one morning serving a continental breakfast. The firm also provided free massages one day and had daily raffle drawings. The prizes included gift certificates, paid time off and a copy of the MoFo cookbook (a collection of favorite recipes of attorneys and staff). MoFo’s grand prizes were a travel voucher for up to $400 and lunch for two on the Napa Valley Wine Train. Palo Alto-based Cooley Godward also provided its San Francisco staff with a continental breakfast one morning (the Palo Alto staff received candy). The firm’s entire staff also received $50 gift certificates, a Maglite flashlight, and a barbecue lunch. Palo Alto-based Fenwick & West kicked off the week with a breakfast for its entire staff. In addition, the firm issued certificates of appreciation — which consisted of either a $100 bill or a bonus day off with pay.
