Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold has tapped its presiding partner since 1995, Kevin Dunne, to take the reins as the San Francisco-based litigation firm’s new managing partner. “I’m very excited; we’ve got a lot of ambitious plans,” Dunne said. Dunne said he plans to double the number of attorneys at the 276-attorney firm within the next four to five years. Sedgwick is taking on nine new associates in a month and is looking for 10 more. The firm is also planning an open house for prospective applicants. “Historically, we’ve always done best when the economy has not done well,” he said. Sedgwick grew its way through the recession of the 1990s. The firm claimed $27 million in revenue in 1990 and $42.7 million the next year. Under David Bordon, the firm’s managing partner for the last 10 years, the firm more than doubled in size. Dunne said Bordon stepped down to return to his practice and especially focus on his work for the underwriters at Lloyd’s of London. Some of the practices pushing Sedgwick’s current growth are in environmental matters, labor, toxic torts, mass tort litigation, products liability and high-end insurance work, Dunne said. Dunne said he plans to take less of a hands-on approach than his predecessor by delegating most of the administrative oversight to the firm’s chief operating officer, Gregg Rimes.
