The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office announced on Wednesday that it is adding an extra layer of review to applications for business method patents.
The action comes amid a barrage of criticism from the software industry and the legal community that the agency has been issuing patents for ways of doing business on the Internet that are common in the offline world and thus obvious and not novel.
