San Francisco-based Morrison & Foerster has wooed two prominent entertainment industry attorneys, partners M. Kenneth Suddleson and Ivy Kagan Bierman, to its Los Angeles office. Suddleson and Bierman joined MoFo from Los Angeles’ Katten Muchin & Zavis on Aug. 1. Three Katten associates — Marlyn Gates, Jennifer Ortega and Robert Cooper — also jumped to MoFo. The new hires will help MoFo build a presence in the traditional entertainment arena. Daniel McIntosh, co-chairman of MoFo’s Los Angeles media and technology group, said the entertainment industry has looked to MoFo to handle technology-related issues, but in the last couple of years the firm has sought to establish capabilities in traditional entertainment work, such as production and contracts. With the new hires, MoFo has 18 attorneys in its entertainment/new media and technology group in Los Angeles. McIntosh said Suddleson is regarded as “one of the gems” in the entertainment field. And he said Bierman is a “dynamo” who is on the short list of labor lawyers with experience in guild matters on the production side. Suddleson said he was attracted by MoFo’s “terrific technology practice and the international character of the firm,” which he said would complement his entertainment practice. His clients include Tohokushinsha Film Corp., the largest television distributor in Japan, the Culver City, Calif.-based Webcasting company Icebox.com, and Digital Domain, based in Venice, Calif. Suddleson was at Katten for 3-1/2 years and prior to that spent four years at Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler’s Los Angeles office. Before entering private practice he was an executive vice president at Paramount Pictures.
