London-based Lovells is taking on new staff as Human Rights Act (HRA) work floods into the firm. Partner Jennifer McDermott is leading a 10-strong team masterminding Lovells’ HRA planning. She says the HRA has already created new work as clients scramble to keep up-to-date with the act. More lawyers will be recruited as the HRA caseload grows. “The act is producing real jobs for our solicitors. Those who deal with public bodies have been especially busy advising their clients,” says McDermott. “We are already recruiting more people because of the recent increase in commercial judicial review work. The coming of the HRA will increase this pressure for new staff,” she adds. McDermott says the firm has sent about 2,000 pamphlets to clients outlining their HRA obligations. Lawyers have also been briefed through seminars targeted at their practice areas. Lovells’ human rights and judicial review committee has been formulating the firm’s approach to the act for nearly three years. “We’ve had a big drive in the last 12 months to ensure everyone is up to speed,” says McDermott.
