NEW HIRES Palo Alto, Calif.’s Cooley Godward has hired Adam J. Ruttenberg, 33, as a partner in the firm’s business department in Reston, Va. He was previously the vice president of contracts and sales operation for MicroStrategy Inc. He received his J.D. from Washington University in 1992. Ned Othman has joined Philadelphia’s Duane, Morris & Heckscher as a partner in the firm’s Chicago office, where he will head the corporate finance group. He was previously a partner at Milwaukee’s Foley & Lardner in Chicago. He received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1977. Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal has hired John E. Rooney and Michael Guerra for the firm’s energy and telecommunications practice in its Chicago office. Rooney will lead the energy and telecommunications practice. He was previously a partner with Chicago’s Hopkins & Sutter. He received his J.D. from John Marshall Law School in 1988. Guerra was also a partner at Hopkins & Sutter. He received his J.D. in 1988 from John Marshall Law School. Dr. Michael Shamos, an Internet legal expert, has joined Pittsburgh, Pa.’s Reed Smith as special counsel. He is also the co-director of Carnegie Mellon University’s Institute for eCommerce. In addition to six other degrees, including a Ph.D. from Yale University in Computer Science, Shamos received his J.D. with honors from Duquesne University in 1981. Chicago’s Baker & McKenzie has hired George E. Fleming as senior counsel in its San Diego office to be part of the general civil litigation practice group. Previously, he was a sole practitioner and a partner at San Diego’s Chapin, Fleming, McNitt, Shea & Carter. Fleming specializes in tort, product liability, professional negligence and commercial litigation. He received his J.D. from California Western School of Law in 1975. Richmond, Va.’s Hunton & Williams has hired Chuck Rosenberg as counsel in the business crimes practice in their McLean, Va. office. He was previously a federal prosecutor in Alexandria. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia. Pittsburgh’s Buchanan Ingersoll has hired Scott Irmscher as a shareholder in the firm’s Real Estate group. He received his J.D. from the Indiana University School of Law. Richmond, Va.’s Sands Anderson Marks & Miller has hired two new attorneys to its home office. Bradford C. Jacob, who joins the firm as counsel in the healthcare practice, was previously an associate at Norfolk, Va.’s Taylor & Walker. He received his J.D. from the University of Richmond in 1993. Andrew K. Clark joins the firm as an associate in the business and professional litigation practices. He received his J.D. from the University of Richmond in 2000. ELECTIONS & APPOINTMENTS Martha P. Rogers, a shareholder in the Washington, D.C. office of Baltimore’s Ober Kaler, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on Admissions and Grievances for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. She received her J.D. from George Washington University in 1977.
