U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker's decision to permit media viewing of the entire endgame of California executions may seem morbid, but it is an encouraging result for First Amendment advocates. Because the government exercises near-total control over prisoners, media access to prisons is the proverbial canary in the mine shaft, an indicator of the overall health of the First Amendment and other civil rights.
