After decades of debate and hand-wringing about justice being for sale, five Texas attorneys and two consumer interest groups have gone to federal court to challenge the way the state chooses its judges.

The attorneys joined Public Citizen Inc. and Gray Panthers Project Fund in suing Secretary of State Elton Bomer April 3. They are asking that Bomer be enjoined from certifying the results of any judicial race held after Jan. 1, 2001, unless a constitutional system for selecting judges is in effect.
