The Federal Communications Commission is asking America Online Inc. to provide more information regarding its stake in Hughes Electronics Corp., a unit of General Motors Corp. that owns DirecTV. In a letter to AOL and Time Warner Inc.’s lawyers that was released Monday, the FCC’s cable bureau asked the companies to tell the agency how directors are chosen for Hughes and what AOL’s rights are as a holder of Hughes stock. Hughes operates DirecTV, a satellite television service that competes with Time Warner’s cable system, and regulators are supposedly concerned about giving Time Warner too much control over the venture. The FCC also asked for more information about Time Warner’s cable telephony plans and about AOL’s instant messaging service, which allows customers to send e-mail messages instantaneously. The agency said it should receive all requested information by June 30. Officials from Time Warner and AOL said they would respond to the filing “expeditiously.” Copyright 2000 TDD, LLC.
